The quiet mountains are bustling for a moment. Three years ago, the Pugu Silver Lake Cooperative planted tens of thousands of acres of high-quality prickly pears here. Now, the barren mountains are green and covered with fruits.
In the season of fragrant osmanthus, it is also the season of ripe prickly pear. Beside the ditches, in the mountains and forests, and behind the houses in front of the village in Panxian, there are prickly pears shining with gold everywhere. Idle farmers, women left at home, and children on summer vacation pick golden prickly pears with bags, baskets, and baskets, and transport them to rural fields, cities, and factories in exchange for a substantial income.
Cili, known as the king of vitamin C, has a fresh fruit content of 50 times that of citrus, 10 times that of kiwi, and 52 times that of apples per 100 grams. It is also rich in superoxide dismutase, which has antiviral and radiation resistant effects and is widely used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, digestive system, and various tumor diseases.
The good medicinal and edible value of prickly pear is being recognized by more and more people, and more and more people are beginning to prefer this sweet and astringent mountain wild fruit, which accidentally pricks their hands. Guizhou Tianci Li Company seized the opportunity to build processing plants and bases, turning former wild fruits into scarce commodities such as beverages, preserved fruits, fruit wine, and canned goods. During the harvest season of prickly pear, the factory works overtime 24 hours a day to produce and digest about 100 tons of fresh prickly pear per day.
Panxian people are not unfamiliar with prickly pear because it can be seen everywhere. As long as there is soil and sufficient water, even in the crevices of rocks, it can grow vigorously and bear large and sweet fruits, making it a "water bag" and "dry food" for cattle herders and passersby to quench their thirst and satisfy their hunger. Its outstanding economic, social, and ecological value, good adaptability, and strong vitality have made it an important tree species for rocky desertification control and greening. The implementation of the Green Guizhou Construction Action Plan has elevated this previously neglected wild fruit to an unprecedented level. Currently, 140000 acres of prickly pear have been planted in the entire county, with nearly 30 enterprises and large households involved in the planting and development of prickly pear.
Every year in Dashanya Village, Liuguan Town, villagers pick wild prickly pears and sell them in the city. Farmers such as Zhou Ruhua and Xu Kefen earn around 3000 yuan from picking wild prickly pears alone; Tang Renwei from Taoyuan Village, Shuitang Town has been planting prickly pears since 2009. Now, he can earn over 40000 yuan from selling prickly pears alone a year. In 2013, he partnered with others to plant over 300 acres of prickly pears; Wu Xiuyang, a fellow villager in the same village, has already sold over 400 kilograms of preserved prickly pear fruits online through opening an online store. Even in Shandong, Liaoning and other places, people have ordered him preserved prickly pear fruits and prickly pear seedlings. Now, his preserved prickly pear fruits are out of stock; Zhang Guineng and others from Genapu Village, Yingwu Township, established a specialized farmer cooperative for the cultivation and breeding of prickly pear. Last year, 15000 acres of prickly pear were planted in Yingwu Township and Liuguan Town, and this year, the planting scale will be further expanded
The golden prickly pear brings golden hope. A prickly pear industry chain that integrates planting, processing, and sales has initially formed in Panxian.
